Fast Triacylglycerol Fingerprinting in Edible Oils by Subcritical Solvent Chromatography

Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has witnessed a resurge of interest in the last decade, motivated by substantial progress hardware capabilities and development specifically tailored packing materials. Meanwhile, technique been transitioning to use mobile phases which an organic co-solvent is mixed carbon dioxide under subcritical conditions (subFC). The phase modifier will also affect selectivity, extend range SFC-amenable compounds, including lipids. In this research, subFC method was developed for separation triacylglycerols (TAGs) edible oils vegetable origin, namely borage, corn, hazelnut, olive, palm, peanut, soybean oil. For all samples investigated, elution TAG species achieved within 8 min, only exception being borage oil (14 min run), characterized TAGs spanning wide partition number (PN 36–56), as constituted fatty acids differing alkyl chain lengths (CN 14–24), degree unsaturation (DB 0–9). coupling mass spectrometry (MS) detection allowed average parameters acid composition be derived constituents. A total 121 were identified subFC-MS, with reduced analysis time solvent consumption (1.5 mL per analysis) compared common chromatographic approaches. Key features hereby are low toxicity, costs, environmental impact. Notably, separations conducted at room temperature, beneficial terms column life.
